This fully custom acoustic guitar is my most intricate and demanding woodworking project to date, combining precision craftsmanship with functional design. I've always wanted to make a guitar, so I'm excited to be finally crossing this instrument off of my woodworking bucket list!
At the time I was unaware, but the journey to build my first acoustic guitar ultimately began in May 2020 when I personally cut and milled black cherry slabs, setting them aside for some future use. Over three years later, I decided to build a guitar, and began by planing and ripping the necessary raw stock. With my father-in-law coaching me through the luthier process, I tackled each step with a mix of traditional hand tools and modern woodworking techniques. Building an acoustic guitar was particularly challenging because many steps, such as carving the Spanish heel and setting the inlays, required delicate handwork and careful skill. The inlay, crafted from abalone shell collected during my travels in New Zealand, adds a deeply personal and unique touch to the guitar.
This project marks a milestone in my journey as a woodworker, a craft I began in high school and have honed through years of practice. The guitar pushed me to refine my skills, explore new techniques, and maintain focus on a single project for over three years. It taught me the value of perseverance, attention to detail, and the artistry of combining functional design with personal expression. This guitar is not only an instrument but a testament to my growth as a craftsman and my passion for creating lasting, meaningful work.
